On Saturday, October 24th, Rotterdam-based label and recording studio Instrument of Change presents an intimate ADE get-together at Amsterdam’s new hotspot Café de Leven, celebrating a series of new collaborative projects.
The evening starts with a three-course dinner, followed by a Q&A and listening session, before rounding off with DJ sets.
Acclaimed Welsh DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Tom Ellis has spent the past two years working with Steven Pieters of Instrument of Change, writing and recording a body of new music together. Both artists came of age during the height of the minimal and deep house movement of the early 2000s and share a longstanding love of jazz, soul and funk-infused house music, while remaining closely connected to the deeper and more spiritual side of the genre.
The first fruits of their collaboration arrived in late September with the release of the Rise Above EP on Parisian label Chapelle XIV, part of the wider Yoyaku family.
The EP will be followed by a full-length album under the Soul State Jazz moniker. This project is centred around Tom Ellis’ live setup and features contributions from musicians from the UK, German and Dutch jazz scenes. The album is expected to be released this winter.
During the Q&A, Tom and Steven will discuss their collaborative projects, production process and future plans, followed by a listening session featuring a selection of new and unreleased music.
Dinner will be prepared by Steven’s cousin Igor Rhemrev, a devoted connoisseur of Asian cuisine, who will serve a three-course Southeast Asian-inspired soul food menu, with both meat and vegetarian options. Places for dinner are limited, so reservations are required.
